As you may know, Windows 10 was officially released on July 29 and is a free upgrade for existing Windows 7 and 8 users and in conjunction, we would like to issue a warning to our clients and readers about an associated ransomware threat.
A threat has recently been identified by Cisco whereby an email impersonating Microsoft offers a free upgrade to Windows 10 and asks the recipient to install an attachment. The attachment is actually a malicious application that locks user files and asks for payment to unlock them, known as ransomware.
Please see the link to the Cisco blog article below and we ask that you take a moment to familiarise yourself with the tell-tale signs of these types of threats.
While measures can be taken to protect from malicious applications, these are an evolving threat so staff and user education is equally important. In addition to virus protection, a comprehensive backup plan is essential; one that includes off-site backup, ideally continuous and automated, such as the cloud server based backup solution Nettko has partnered with Microsoft to deliver.
If you would like to further discuss protection of your PCs and Servers or your backup place, call Nettko today on 1300 NETTKO to have a friendly educational chat.
