Time to Plan: Windows End-of-Support - What you need to know

When Does Support End?

Microsoft will officially end all support for Windows 10 (Home, Pro, Education, Enterprise) on October 14, 2025.
After this date, there will be no more security updates, bug fixes, feature updates, or technical assistance.

What Happens After That?

  • Your PC still works: Windows 10 won’t suddenly stop running, but it won’t stay secure.
  • Security Risks Increase: No updates means vulnerabilities will pile up, making your PC a bigger target.
  • Compatibility Loss: Over time, apps, drivers, and devices may stop supporting Windows 10.

Extended Security Options

  • Paid ESU Program: Microsoft offers Extended Security Updates (ESU). Individuals can pay a one-time US $30 (for up to 10 devices).
Businesses will pay more via tiered pricing.
  • Free Extra Year: Eligible users can get one extra year of free security updates by syncing their Microsoft account or redeeming Microsoft Rewards points.

OneNote for Windows 10 Also Ends

The OneNote for Windows 10 app will also stop being supported on October 14, 2025. It will become read-only, so you’ll need to switch to the newer OneNote app from the Microsoft Store.

Special Case: Windows 10 LTSC

The Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 edition will receive updates until January 13, 2032. However, this is mainly for industrial/business systems and not for general consumer use.

What Are Your Options?

Option Description Upgrade to Windows 11 (free)Best if your hardware is compatible. Offers better security and performance.
Buy a new PC with Windows 11 Recommended if your current device doesn’t support Windows 11. Use ESU or free extension Extend support temporarily with paid ESU or the free extra year.
Switch OS Try Linux, ChromeOS Flex, or another alternative. LTSC edition Long-term option, but only for enterprises and specialized devices.

Why You Should Prepare Now

  • Security Concerns: Your system will be more exposed to malware and ransomware.
  • E-waste Risks: Many old PCs may get discarded due to upgrade issues.
  • Business Risks: Companies without a transition plan could face compliance and operational challenges.

Quick Takeaway

  • Windows 10 support ends October 14, 2025.
  • PCs will still work, but security risks grow.
  • Upgrade, replace, extend support, or switch to another OS.
  • OneNote for Windows 10 also ends.
